The Dummhaus Home Controller combats smart home privacy concerns through the open-source modification of a facsimile Model 302 telephone

Problem

My partner found it tedious to turn on the several small lamps that light our home. At the same time, we are hesitant to use IoT smart devices due to privacy concerns.

Solution

In my design course, I had an assignment to add new functionality to an existing object, so I chose to create a "dumb home" control device with a rotary phone and a custom outlet. When a number is pressed on the phone, a corresponding outlet will switch, either on or off. When the handset is "hung up," all outlets in the system switch off.

Outlet

For a bit of fun, I designed a 3D-printed housing shaped like a telephone. Inside the "dumb outlet," there are two relays to switch power on and off, radio electronics, and a touch sensor for local switching.

Controller

The transmitter (Arduino and 433mhz radio module) is housed inside a fascimile Model 302 rotary telephone. I had to remove the original membrane button mechanism and replace it with a custom board to interface with the Arduino.
